Open floor plan, or simply open plan, is a type of interior layout to building, most commonly associated with homes. Usually when people are talking about it they are referring to a home which has a large open area on the ground floor, where a kitchen, dining room, and living room are all interconnected and without any walls.

This type of design has both its good aspects and drawbacks, and whether or not you’ll like it personally is something that depends entirely on the type of person you are. From a design aspect, its benefits are clear: It means that every part of the open area has access to windows from around the house, which means that some parts of the building will receive more sunlight than if it wasn’t open floor plan. The drawbacks, however, are also clear; in that any open floor plan doesn’t allow people to segment themselves in a different room, so there is a clear risk to privacy and an increased risk of people causing disruptions to others in the building (such as somebody trying to watch TV while another person is in the kitchen).
